SERVICES
Communicating with DEAF and HARD of HEARING People

TEXT DIRECT![]() The "Text Direct" service is arranged by BT and RNID with Typetalk Deaf and Hard of Hearing people might need to use this telephone service for communication if they do not have an email address. Deaf and speech impaired people use what is called a Textphone. The Textphone has a keyboard and a small screen on which it displays the other persons conversation. To call a Textphone from an ordinary telephone you must use the prefix 18002 then the full number of the person you wish to call. Please note: the service is not yet available with most mobile phones. |
By inserting this short prefix number before the standard telephone number, it will bring a Typetalk operator into the call to relay the conversation for you. You must end each piece of your conversation with "GA", meaning Go Ahead. This is the only way the person you are calling can know if you have finished speaking. The other point to note is that the voice you are speaking to is not that of the person you called. Typetalk operators are both male and female which could be disconcerting if the person you expect to talk to is not the right gender! It is also difficult for the hearing person to talk to an intermediary this way as the voice is unfamiliar. Despite these anomalies and the slight delay to transfer the text, it really does work just as a normal phone. Most textphones have an answerphone facility so the TT operator will leave your message if required. |
